What is Defenisible Space?

The phrase “defensible space” is a reference to the buffer area between your house and an oncoming wildfire. Having defensible space around your house allows firefighters to do there job in a safer and more effective manner.
And in the event that firefighters are not available, defensible space also increases the chances of home survival with no assistance.
In many cases when the homeowner hears the phrase “defensible space” he/she automatically thinks of their yard turning into a bare lot
surrounding their home. This is not the case. In the Basin we are trying to keep our beautiful Lake Tahoe clear. So many efforts are being
made to keep the soil erosion down and the clarity of the lake up. So our goal is to find a happy median between erosion control and effective
defensible space. There are many things that we can do to help keep our lake clear and our homes safe from fire for many years to come.

Do I Need Defensible Space?

Ask yourself these simple questions:
Do I have dead trees, brush, and other dead vegetation 30 ft. from my house?
Do my trees have dead or low hanging limbs?
Do I have tree branches
touching my house or hanging over my roof?
Is my roof covered in dead pine needles?
Does my house have anything that will burn in the
5 ft. no combustible zone?
Do I feel my house is unsafe if fire was threatening my neighborhood?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes,
then your home is not safe from the threat of wildfire.

Living with Fire in the Lake Tahoe Basin is becoming an unfortunate reality.
A good offense is your best defense, and defensible space is your strongest weapon against wildfires. It's not a question of if a fire will happen, but when, and will your home survive?
